It has been a tradition for a lengthy time. However, the term "mudik" only became popular in the 1970s. Migrants mostly do homecoming in Jakarta, most of whom come from Java. Meanwhile, for the Javanese, going home is defined as "mulih dhisik," or translates as "going home first." On the other hand, the Betawi people interpret going home as returning to the village. In the Betawi language, “udik” means village. Therefore, when the Javanese are about to return to their hometowns, the Betawi people say they are going back to the village. Finally, this term has been simplified from the village (udik) to homecoming (mudik).
Then, in the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the word "mudik" has two meanings: returning to their hometown and sailing to the village (upstream of the river, inland). Over time, the word mudik has changed its meaning. Previously, it meant going to the river's headwaters, but then it changed to the village. Whereas in modern times, mudik means going to the village. Whereas now, homecoming's significance isn't limited to a village or suburbs. It now represents a place of origin.
